26 그러므로 오늘 여러분에게 엄숙히 선언합니다. 여러분 가운데 설령 누군가 구원받지 못하는 사람이 있다고 하더라도 내게는 책임이 없습니다.

27 그것은 내가 주저하지 않고 하나님의 모든 뜻을 여러분에게 전해 주었기 때문입니다.

28 여러분은 자신들과 모든 맡겨진 양 떼를 잘 살피고 그들을 잘 돌보십시오. 성령께서 여러분을 감독자로 세우셔서 하나님께서 자기 아들의 피로 사신 교회를 돌보게 하셨습니다.

29 내가 떠난 뒤에 어떤 사람들이 사나운 이리처럼 교회에 들어와서 양 떼를 해치려 할 것을 나는 압니다.

30 또한 여러분 가운데서도 진리를 왜곡되게 말하고, 제자들을 유혹하여 자기를 따르게 하는 사람들도 나타날 것입니다.

31 그러므로 깨어 있으십시오. 내가 삼 년 동안을 밤낮으로, 때로는 눈물을 흘리며 여러분 한 사람 한 사람에게 쉬지 않고 교훈한 것을 기억하십시오.

Today's Word

26 Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.

27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.

28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.

30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.

31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

Background

Paul is having his final meeting with the elders of the Ephesian church in Miletus. He knows he will never see them again as he journeys toward Jerusalem. This scene is similar to a teacher giving final important instructions to graduating students.

Paul ministered in Ephesus for about three years, which was the longest period he stayed in one place. He loved this church and was concerned about its future. He especially anticipated that people would come to harm the church after his departure.

The church at that time faced various threats. From outside, there was persecution from both Jews and Gentiles, and from inside, there was danger of false teachers appearing to deceive believers. Paul emphasizes how crucial the role of church leaders is in this situation.
