1 우리는 그들과 작별 인사를 한 뒤에 배를 타고 곧장 고스로 갔습니다. 이튿날, 우리는 로도에 들렀다가 거기서 바다라로 떠났습니다. 2 그 곳에서 우리는 베니게로 가는 배를 만나서 그 배를 타고 떠났습니다. 3 키프로스 섬이 눈앞에 나타났을 때에 우리는 그 섬을 왼쪽에 두고 시리아로 가다가 두로에 배를 댔습니다. 그 곳에서 배가 짐을 풀기로 되어 있었기 때문입니다. 4 우리는 두로에서 신자들을 만나 일 주일을 그들과 함께 지냈습니다. 그들은 성령께서 알려 주신 대로 바울에게 예루살렘에 가지 말라고 만류했습니다. 5 그러나 그들과 함께한 시간이 다 되자, 우리는 그 곳을 떠나 여행길에 올랐습니다. 모든 신자들이 아내와 아이들을 데리고 도시 바깥까지 나와 우리를 배웅해 주었습니다. 우리는 모두 바닷가에서 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다. 6 서로 작별 인사를 나눈 후, 우리는 배에 올랐고, 두로 지방의 신자들은 각자 집으로 돌아갔습니다.

1 After we had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed straight to Kos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. 2 We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went on board and set sail. 3 After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria. We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. 4 We sought out the disciples there and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5 When it was time to leave, we left and continued on our way. All of them, including wives and children, accompanied us out of the city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray. 6 After saying goodbye to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.

Background

Paul was heading to Jerusalem after completing his third missionary journey. After a tearful farewell with the Ephesian elders (Acts 20:36-38), he traveled through several port cities and arrived at Tyre. Tyre was an important trading city on the Mediterranean coast where a community of believers had already been established.
