17 그후, 내가 예루살렘으로 돌아와 성전 뜰에서 기도하고 있는 도중에 어떤 환상을 보게 되었습니다. 18 그 환상 중에 주님을 보았는데, 주님께서 내게 말씀하셨습니다. '서둘러 예루살렘을 떠나라. 이 곳 사람들은 네가 나를 증언하는 것을 받아들이지 않을 것이다.' 19 그래서 나는 대답했습니다. '주님, 이들은 제가 여러 회당을 돌아다니며 주님을 믿는 사람들을 잡아 감옥에 가두고 때리기까지 한 일을 잘 알고 있습니다. 20 뿐만 아니라 주님의 증인인 스데반이 죽임을 당할 때에 제가 그 자리에 있던 것도 알고 있습니다. 저는 그 때, 거기에 서서 그들이 스데반을 죽이는 일에 찬성했으며 그를 죽이는 사람들의 옷을 맡아 주기까지 했습니다.' 21 그러나 주님께서는 내게 '가거라. 내가 너를 멀리 이방인들에게 보내겠다' 하고 말씀하셨습니다."

17 "When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw the Lord speaking to me. 'Quick!' he said. 'Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.' 19 "'Lord,' I replied, 'these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' 21 "Then the Lord said to me, 'Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.'"

Background

Paul is now defending himself before a hostile Jewish crowd in Jerusalem, right after being arrested at the temple. He is explaining how he met Jesus and how he was called to be a missionary to the Gentiles.

Paul recounts what happened when he returned to Jerusalem after meeting Jesus on the Damascus road. While praying at the temple, he encountered Jesus again and received a command to leave Jerusalem and preach the gospel to the Gentiles. Paul had thought that the people of Jerusalem, who knew his past, would accept the gospel when they saw his transformation. However, Jesus had a different plan.
