"왕이시여, 저는 그 곳을 향해 가다가 정오쯤 되어 하늘에서 해보다 더 밝은 빛이 저와 제 일행을 둘러 비추는 것을 보았습니다. 우리는 모두 땅에 엎어졌습니다. 그 때에 저는 히브리 말로 '사울아, 사울아, 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐? 가시 돋친 채찍을 발로 차 보아야 너만 다칠 뿐이다'라는 음성을 들었습니다. 제가 '주님, 당신은 누구십니까?'라고 묻자, 주님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. '나는 네가 박해하는 예수다. 일어나라! 발을 딛고 서라! 내가 이렇게 네게 나타난 것은, 너를 나의 일꾼으로 삼아 네가 본 것과 앞으로 내가 네게 보여 줄 것을 사람들에게 증언하도록 하기 위해서이다. 내가 너를 이 백성과 이방인들에게서 구원할 것이며, 너를 이방인에게로 보내어 그들의 눈을 뜨게 하고, 어둠에서 빛으로, 사탄의 세력에서 하나님께로 돌아오게 하겠다. 그리하여 그들의 죄를 용서받을 수 있게 하고, 또 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 백성들과 한자리에 들게 하겠다.'" "About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.' Then I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?' 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' the Lord replied. 'Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'" (Acts 26:13-18, NIV)

Background

Paul is now making his defense before King Agrippa. He explains the decisive moment that led him to become a Christian. Damascus was a city about 220 kilometers (137 miles) north of Jerusalem. Paul (then called Saul) was on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians. He was convinced that persecuting believers in Jesus was service to God. But around noon, a brilliant light suddenly shone from heaven, and his life was completely transformed.
