Today's Word

For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance! (Acts 28:30-31, NIV)

Background

The book of Acts concludes with this scene of Paul's arrival in Rome. Though Paul was a prisoner, the Roman government granted him the freedom to rent his own house and receive visitors. While a soldier guarded him, Paul never stopped proclaiming the gospel in this situation.

About five years had passed since his arrest in Jerusalem. Paul spent two years in Caesarea, approximately one year traveling to Rome and on Malta, and then another two years in Rome. It was a long time, but for Paul, every moment was an opportunity to share the gospel.

It's significant that Acts ends without recording Paul's martyrdom or the outcome of his trial. Luke shows that the story of the gospel hasn't ended and must continue.
