사도행전 개론 (5) : 예루살렘 공회 - 기독교의 운명을 바꾼 회의

들어가며

사도행전 15장에 나오는 예루살렘 공회는 기독교 역사상 가장 중요한 회의입니다. 이 회의에서 내린 결정 하나가 기독교를 유대인만의 종교에서 전 세계 종교로 바꿔놓았기 때문입니다.

1. 문제의 시작: 교회가 커지면서 생긴 갈등

초기 교회의 모습

처음 예루살렘에 생긴 교회는 거의 유대인들로만 이루어져 있었습니다. 이들은 예수님을 메시아로 믿으면서도 여전히 성전에 나가고 율법을 지켰습니다(행 2:46).

이방인들도 예수님을 믿기 시작

그런데 점점 이방인들도 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다:

• 빌립이 사마리아 사람들에게 복음을 전했고(행 8장)
• 베드로가 로마 군인 고넬료의 집에서 복음을 전했는데, 이방인들에게도 성령이 임했습니다(행 10장)
• 안디옥 교회에서는 유대인과 이방인이 함께 예배드렸습니다(행 11장)

갈등 폭발

바울과 바나바가 1차 전도여행을 마치고 돌아왔을 때, 문제가 터졌습니다. 어떤 유대인 신자들이 와서 이렇게 주장했습니다:

"이방인들이 구원받으려면 할례를 받고 율법을 지켜야 한다!"(행 15:1)

이는 곧 "이방인이 예수님을 믿으려면 먼저 유대교도가 되어야 한다"는 뜻이었습니다.

2. 예루살렘 공회: 운명을 건 토론

핵심 질문

이 회의에서 다룬 질문은 간단했지만 엄청나게 중요했습니다:

"이방인이 구원받으려면 할례와 율법이 필요한가?"

서로 다른 배경을 가진 사람들이 어떻게 하나의 교회를 이룰 수 있는지 보여줍니다. 중요한 것과 중요하지 않은 것을 구별하고, 사랑으로 하나 되는 것이 핵심입니다.

예루살렘 공회는 겉보기에는 단순한 교회 회의 같지만, 실제로는 기독교의 운명을 결정한 역사적 사건이었습니다. "이방인도 할례 없이 예수님을 믿을 수 있다"는 이 결정 하나가 기독교를 전 세계로 퍼뜨리는 결정적 계기가 되었습니다.

What the Early Church Looked Like

The first church in Jerusalem was made up almost entirely of Jewish people. Even though they believed Jesus was the Messiah, they still went to the temple and followed Jewish laws (Acts 2:46).

Gentiles Started Believing in Jesus Too

The Conflict Explodes

When Paul and Barnabas returned from their first missionary journey, trouble started. Some Jewish believers came and made this claim:

"Gentiles must be circumcised and follow the law to be saved!" (Acts 15:1)

This basically meant: "If Gentiles want to believe in Jesus, they must first become Jews."

2. The Jerusalem Council: A Life-or-Death Debate

The Key Question

The question discussed at this meeting was simple but incredibly important:

"Do Gentiles need circumcision and the law to be saved?"

3. Don't eat meat from strangled animals

Salvation depends not on what we do, but on believing in what Jesus did. Pure faith, not religious acts or cultural customs, is what matters.

The gospel isn't trapped in any particular culture. Whether you're Korean, American, African, or from anywhere else, you can believe in Jesus within your own culture.

Unity in the Church

This shows how people from different backgrounds can become one church. The key is distinguishing between what's essential and what's not, and becoming united in love.

Conclusion

The Jerusalem Council may look like just another church meeting, but it was actually a historic event that determined Christianity's destiny. The single decision that "Gentiles can believe in Jesus without circumcision" became the crucial turning point that spread Christianity throughout the world.

The spirit of this council lives on today. Protecting the essence of the gospel while accepting cultural diversity, and people from different backgrounds becoming one in Christ - this is the precious legacy the Jerusalem Council left for us.
