10 총독이 바울에게 말하라고 몸짓하자, 바울이 대답했습니다. "각하께서 수 년 동안, 이 민족의 재판장이 되신 것을 제가 알고 있습니다. 그래서 저와 관련된 일을 각하께 변명하게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각합니다.

11 제가 예루살렘에 예배드리러 올라간 것은 십이 일밖에 되지 않습니다. 이것은 각하께서 조사해 보시면 금방 아실 수 있을 것입니다.

12 그리고 저를 고소하는 사람들은 제가 성전 뜰에서 누구와 논쟁한 것이나, 회당에서나 도시 안에서나 사람들을 선동한 것을 본 적이 없습니다.

13 그리고 이들이 지금 저를 고소하고 있지만 총독 각하께 그 내용에 대한 증거는 제시하지 못하고 있습니다.

14 그러나 저는 각하께 이 사실을 고백합니다. 저는 유대인들이 소위 이단이라고 말하는 예수의 '도'를 따르는 사람으로서, 우리 조상의 하나님을 섬기며 모세의 율법과 예언자들의 책에 적힌 것도 다 믿는다는 사실입니다.

15 저는 이 사람들이 간직하고 있는 것과 똑같이, 하나님께 대한 소망을 가지고 있습니다. 그것은 의로운 사람이든 불의한 사람이든 모든 사람이 다시 부활하리라는 소망입니다.

16 그래서 저는 언제나 하나님과 사람들 앞에서 저의 깨끗한 양심을 간직하려고 힘쓰고 있습니다."

Scripture: Acts 24:10-16

Today's Word

10 When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: "I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense.

11 You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.

12 My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city.

13 And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.

14 However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,

15 and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.

16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man."

(Acts 24:10-16, NIV)

Background

Paul was arrested in Jerusalem and brought before Governor Felix in Caesarea for trial. The high priest Ananias and the lawyer Tertullus had accused Paul of being a troublemaker and ringleader of the Nazarene sect. Now it was Paul's turn to defend himself.

Felix held the power of life and death over Paul. This defense could determine whether Paul would live or die. This moment could potentially be Paul's last opportunity to testify. In such a critical situation, what did Paul choose to say?

When you think about what your last words would be, you discover what your true priorities are. Money and possessions? Or faith and God's love?
2. Write Your Will in Advance - Preparing for the last moment is not morbid but wise. By writing your will in advance, you can confirm what values you truly want to pass on. "Trust in Jesus. Jesus is your strength. God is good. God is trustworthy. Jesus loves you." This should be our final message.
3. Design Today Backwards from the End - Imagine and prepare for the last moment of this life, then work backwards from there to set today's direction. If you believe in resurrection, if you know you will one day stand before God, the priorities of what you should do today will change. You will live a life that puts first things first, doing what must be done.

1. If today were the last day of my life, who would I want to speak to and what would I say? Does that content reflect my true priorities in life?
2. What am I living for right now? Are the values I'm pursuing meaningful even from an eternal perspective?
3. When I think about resurrection and the day I will stand before God, what do I need to change today?
