31 군인들은 명령대로 그 날 밤으로 바울을 데리고 안디바드리까지 갔습니다. 32 이튿날에는 기병대에게 바울을 가이사랴로 호송하라고 부탁하고 다른 군인들은 예루살렘에 있는 병영으로 돌아갔습니다. 33 기병대는 가이사랴에 도착하여 총독에게 편지를 전달하고 바울도 그에게 넘겨 주었습니다. 34 총독은 편지를 읽고 나서 바울에게 어느 지방 사람이냐고 물었습니다. 총독은 바울이 길리기아 사람이라는 것을 알고는 35 바울에게 이렇게 말했습니다. "그대를 고소하는 사람들이 도착하면 그 때, 그대의 말을 들어 보겠소." 그리고는 바울을 헤롯이 지은 왕궁에 가두어 지키라고 명령을 내렸습니다.

31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul with them during the night and brought him as far as Antipatris. 32 The next day they let the cavalry go on with him, while they returned to the barracks. 33 When the cavalry arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him. 34 The governor read the letter and asked what province he was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia, 35 he said, "I will hear your case when your accusers get here." Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod's palace.

Background

After the plot by forty Jews to kill Paul was exposed, the Roman commander Claudius Lysias mobilized 470 soldiers to urgently escort Paul out of Jerusalem by night. Antipatris was a midway stopping point between Jerusalem and Caesarea. Only the cavalry continued with Paul to Caesarea, while the infantry returned to Jerusalem.

Caesarea was where the Roman governor resided, and it was the very city where Paul had stayed at Philip the evangelist's house and received Agabus's prophecy that he would be "bound in Jerusalem." Now that prophecy was being precisely fulfilled.
