1 오 일 뒤에 대제사장 아나니아가 장로 몇 사람과 더둘로라고 하는 법률가를 데리고 가이사랴에 왔습니다. 그들이 온 것은 총독에게 바울을 고소하기 위해서였습니다.

2 바울이 안으로 불려 들어가자, 더둘로가 고소하기 시작했습니다. "벨릭스 각하! 우리는 각하 덕분에 오랫동안 평화를 누려 왔으며 각하의 지혜로운 일 처리로 우리 나라의 잘못된 일들이 많이 고쳐졌습니다.

3 우리는 언제 어디서나 이 모든 일이 각하의 공로 때문인 것을 인정하며 각하께 감사하고 있습니다.

4 이제 더 이상 각하께 폐가 되지 않게 간단히 말씀드리겠으니 저희 말을 들어 주시기 바랍니다.

5 우리는 이 사람이 온 세계에 있는 유대인들을 선동하고 문제를 일으키는 사람인 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이 사람은 나사렛 이단의 두목입니다.

6 심지어는 그가 성전까지 더럽히려고 하여 우리가 그를 붙잡았습니다.

8 총독 각하께서 이 사람을 직접 심문해 보시면 우리가 그를 고소하는 이유를 아실 수 있을 것입니다."

9 다른 유대인들도 가세하면서 그의 말이 모두 사실이라고 주장했습니다.

Today's Word

1 Five days later the high priest Ananias went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges against Paul before the governor.

2 When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: "We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation.

3 Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude.

4 But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.

5 We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect

6 and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him.

8 By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him."

9 The other Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true.

Background

Five days had passed since Paul was arrested in Jerusalem and escorted to Caesarea. Caesarea was the administrative capital where the Roman governor resided. The high priest Ananias hired a professional lawyer named Tertullus to prosecute Paul, showing how seriously they took this trial.

Felix, the Roman governor at the time, ruled Judea from approximately AD 52-58. He was unusual in that he rose from slavery to become a governor. However, he was actually known as a greedy and cruel ruler. Tertullus's exaggerated praise was far from Felix's actual reputation.
