시간을 많이 빼앗긴 데다가 이미 금식 기간도 지나 더 이상 항해하는 것이 위험했으므로 바울이 그들에게 충고했습니다. "여러분, 계속해서 항해를 하다가는 큰 어려움을 겪게 될 것이라고 생각합니다. 배와 짐만 손실되는 것이 아니라 우리 목숨까지도 잃게 될 것입니다." 그러나 백부장은 바울의 말을 듣기보다는 선장과 선주의 말을 더 믿었습니다. (사도행전 27:9-11, 쉬운성경)

마침 남쪽에서 순풍이 불기 시작하자, 사람들은 자기들의 계획대로 되리라고 생각했습니다. 그래서 그들은 닻을 올리고 크레타 섬 해안을 따라 항해하기 시작했습니다. 그런데 갑자기 '유라굴로'라고 부르는 폭풍이 섬 쪽에서 불어 왔습니다. 배는 폭풍에 휘말려 바람을 거슬러 조금도 앞으로 나아가지를 못했습니다. (사도행전 27:13-15, 쉬운성경)

2. 순조로움에 속지 않기: 남풍이 부는 순간, 사람들은 모든 것이 잘될 것이라고 착각했습니다. 우리도 일이 잘 풀릴 때 하나님을 잊고, 내 계획과 능력을 과신하기 쉽습니다. 순조로운 때일수록 더욱 겸손히 하나님을 의지해야 합니다.
3. 위기 속에서 하나님께 의지하기: 폭풍이 왔을 때, 사람들은 모든 것을 버려야 했습니다. 때로 하나님은 우리가 의지하던 것들을 다 내려놓게 하시고, 오직 그분만 붙잡게 하십니다. 위기는 우리를 더욱 하나님께 가까이 가게 만드는 도구가 될 수 있습니다.

Today's Word

Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, "Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also." But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. (Acts 27:9-11, NIV)

When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island. The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along. (Acts 27:13-15, NIV)

Background

Paul's ship was on its way to Rome. During this time, sailing in the Mediterranean became dangerous after mid-September, and nearly all ships stopped sailing from November to March. The "Day of Atonement" mentioned in the text refers to Yom Kippur, the Jewish holy day that falls between late September and early October. The fact that this period had already passed meant they had entered the dangerous sailing season.

2. Not Being Deceived by Smooth Sailing: The moment the south wind blew, people were deceived into thinking everything would be fine. We too easily forget God and overestimate our plans and abilities when things go well. We need to depend on God with humility, especially during smooth times.
3. Depending on God in Crisis: When the storm came, people had to let go of everything. Sometimes God makes us put down everything we've been depending on and grasp only Him. Crisis can become a tool that draws us closer to God.

1. When making important decisions, do I trust the world's rational judgment or God's Word more? Have I ever ignored God's warning and pushed ahead with my own plans?
2. When things go smoothly, do I approach God with thanksgiving and humility, or do I become overconfident in my abilities and judgment?
