우리는 며칠째 해도 보지 못했고 별도 보지 못했습니다. 바람은 계속해서 거세게 불어 왔습니다. 결국 우리는 살아남을 수 있다는 희망을 모두 포기하고 말았습니다. 사람들이 오랫동안 아무것도 먹지 못하고 있는 가운데 바울이 일어나 그들에게 말했습니다. "여러분, 내가 크레타 섬을 떠나지 말자고 한 말을 들었어야 했습니다. 그랬다면 이런 손해를 입지 않았을 것이고 물건을 잃어버리지도 않았을 것입니다. 하지만 여러분, 이제 제가 권합니다. 용기를 내십시오. 이 배만 잃을 뿐 여러분 중에는 한 사람도 목숨을 잃지 않을 것입니다. 지난 밤에 나의 주님이요, 내가 섬기는 하나님의 천사가 내 곁에 나타나 이렇게 말해 주었습니다. '바울아, 두려워하지 마라. 너는 반드시 황제 가이사 앞에 서야 한다. 하나님께서 너와 함께 항해하는 모든 사람들의 목숨을 너에게 맡겨 주셨다.' 그러니 여러분, 용기를 내십시오. 나는 하나님을 믿습니다. 모든 일이 하나님의 천사가 내게 말씀하신 대로 이루어질 것입니다. 우리는 반드시 어떤 섬에 밀려가 닿게 될 것입니다." When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: "Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.' So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me. Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island." (Acts 27:20-26, NIV)

Paul was traveling to Rome as a prisoner after appealing to Caesar. During the voyage, the ship encountered a violent storm called the "Northeaster" (Euraquilo) and began drifting. For fourteen days, 276 people aboard had been tossed about in the storm without seeing the sun or stars, unable to eat, not knowing when the ship might break apart. This was a moment of absolute despair.

3. Faith Is Based on God's Promise, Not Circumstances: When Paul said "I have faith in God," the storm was still raging and the ship still drifting. Looking at the circumstances, there seemed to be no basis for hope. But true faith is based not on visible circumstances but on God's invisible promises.
