십사 일 되던 밤에 우리는 아드리아 바다에서 표류하였습니다. 한밤중에 선원들은 우리가 어떤 섬에 가까워지고 있음을 느꼈습니다. 그래서 물 깊이를 재어 보니 약 40미터였고, 조금 더 가서 다시 재어 보니 이번에는 약 30미터였습니다. 우리는 혹시 암초에 걸리지는 않을까 염려가 되어 닻 네 개를 물에 던져 놓고 날이 밝기를 기다렸습니다. 그런데 선원 몇 사람이 배에서 빠져 나갈 속셈으로 배 앞쪽에 닻을 더 내린다는 구실로 거룻배를 물에 내렸습니다. 그러자 바울이 백부장과 군인들에게 "이 사람들이 배에 남아 있지 않으면 당신들마저 구조되지 못합니다"라고 말했습니다. 그래서 군인들이 밧줄을 끊어서 거룻배를 떼어 버렸습니다. Today's Word

On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea, when about midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land. They took soundings and found that the water was a hundred and twenty feet deep. A short time later they took soundings again and found it was ninety feet deep. Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight. In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pretending they were going to lower some anchors from the bow. Then Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved." So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it drift away. (Acts 27:27-32, NIV)

We might seem like good people usually, but our true selves emerge when things get really tough. Is it the selfishness of "I just need to survive" or the sacrificial spirit of "let's survive together"? We need to train ourselves starting now by sharing and yielding in small daily matters.
3. Balance between faith and wisdom: Paul believed the promise that "God will save everyone." But he didn't just wait doing nothing. He recognized the reality that the sailors were needed and took immediate action. We too must trust God while responsibly fulfilling our role. Like the saying "pray, but row the boat," faith and action must go together.
