우리는 육지에 무사히 오른 뒤에야 그 섬이 몰타 섬이라는 것을 알았습니다. 비가 오고 매우 추웠습니다. 섬 사람들은 우리에게 분에 넘치는 친절을 베풀며 불을 피워 놓고 우리를 맞아 주었습니다. 바울이 장작을 한 무더기 모아다가 불에 넣었는데, 뜨거운 불 때문에 독사가 튀어나와 바울의 손을 물었습니다. 섬 사람들은 독사가 바울의 손에 매달려 있는 것을 보고 "이 사람은 틀림없이 살인자다. 바다에서는 살아 나왔는지 모르지만 '정의의 신'이 그를 살려 두지 않을 것이다"라며 서로 수군거렸습니다. 그러나 바울은 그 뱀을 불 속에 떨어 버렸고, 아무런 해도 입지 않았습니다. 사람들은 바울의 몸이 부어 오르거나 그가 갑자기 땅바닥에 쓰러져 죽으리라고 예상했습니다. 그런데 아무리 기다려도 바울에게 아무런 일이 일어나지 않자, 그들은 바울을 달리 생각하게 되었습니다. 그들은 바울을 신이라고 불렀습니다. Today's Word

Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live." But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. (Acts 28:1-6, NIV)

After enduring 14 days of violent storms and a shipwreck, Paul and 276 survivors finally reached the island of Malta (Melite). This small island is located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, about 100 kilometers south of Sicily. At that time, Malta was part of the Roman Empire, and most of its inhabitants were descendants of Phoenicians.
