우리가 그리스도께로부터 듣고 여러분에게 전하려고 하는 말씀은, 하나님은 빛이시며 그분께는 전혀 어두움이 없다는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 만약 우리가 하나님과 사귀고 있다고 말하면서 여전히 어두움 가운데 살고 있다면, 우리는 거짓말쟁이며 진리를 따라 살고 있지 않는 것입니다. 하나님께서 빛 가운데 계시기에 우리 역시 빛 가운데서 살아야 합니다. 우리가 빛 가운데 살게 되면 서로 교제하게 됩니다. 또한 하나님의 아들이신 예수 그리스도의 피가 우리의 모든 죄를 깨끗이 씻어 주실 것입니다. 또한 우리가 스스로 죄를 짓지 않았다고 말한다면, 그것은 우리 자신을 속이는 것이며 진리가 우리 안에 없는 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 죄를 고백하면, 그분은 우리를 용서해 주실 것입니다. 그분은 옳은 일만 행하시는 분이기 때문에 우리는 그분을 믿을 수 있습니다. 그분은 우리의 모든 잘못을 깨끗하게 해 주실 것입니다. 우리가 계속 죄를 지은 적이 없다고 말한다면, 그것은 하나님을 거짓말쟁이로 만드는 것이며 우리는 하나님께서 주신 진리의 가르침을 받아들이지 않는 것입니다. Today's Word

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:5-10, NIV)

Background

In the previous verses, John proclaimed the gospel as a witness who personally experienced Jesus Christ. Now he explains God's nature and how we should live.

The Gnostics of that time completely separated the soul and body. They claimed, "Only the soul matters; the body doesn't," and taught that sins committed in the body don't affect the soul. Because of this thinking, some people lived licentious lives while still believing they had fellowship with God.

Conversely, some people claimed to be perfect and said they were without sin. This was also pride and self-deception.

John criticizes both of these extreme attitudes. He begins with the declaration "God is light" and emphasizes that those who have fellowship with God, who is light, must necessarily walk in the light. At the same time, he proclaims the gospel truth that when we acknowledge and confess that we are sinners, God faithfully forgives us.

   • Do I claim to believe in God with my mouth but treat sin lightly in actual life? Am I devout on Sundays but live no differently from worldly people from Monday on? Relationship with God isn't just for Sundays but encompasses all of daily life. We must walk in the light at school, at home, and when with friends.
2. Honestly Acknowledging Sin
   • When I make mistakes or do wrong, do I make excuses or try to hide them? Am I rationalizing with thoughts like "This much is okay," "Everyone else does it too," or "I'm not that bad of a person"? We must be honest before God. When we honestly confess our sins, God will surely forgive us.
3. Living in Grace
   • Walking in the light doesn't mean striving for perfection. We still stumble and fail. But the blood of Jesus continually cleanses us. When we sin, we shouldn't despair but immediately come to God, confess, and receive forgiveness. This is living in grace.
